Discovery Health Medical Aid
Discovery Health is the biggest health insurance and medical aid scheme
in South Africa - a position it has gained in a relatively short space of time,
due to innovative products, and an approach to medical insurance that stresses
preventative healthy lifestyles, and which rewards customers for taking care of
their health so as not to have to use their medical aid. Not only does this
contribute to a healthier population, it also reduces the stress on health
services, and reduces the number of medical aid claims made - thus providing a
buffer against medical aid expenditure and rising premiums. It is able to
leverage its economies of scale to benefit customers in a variety of ways, which
has contributed significantly to its success and popularity.
Discovery Health offers a choice of medical aid plans. The
Comprehensive Series includes unlimited hospital cover, general practitioner
cover (including dental, optometry and psychological), prescription medicine and
specialty drug cover, medical specialists, chronic illness benefits and plenty
of other forms of cover, like hearing aids, maternity benefits and specialist
medical procedures. The basis of the normal day to day cover is the medical
savings account (MSA), which is a sum of money granted to members at the
beginning of each year. This money can be used for any ordinary medical
expenses. Reimbursement is at medical aid rates, and once the MSA funds run out,
Discovery Health continues to provide medical cover, using what they call "Above
Threshold Cover". Customers can join the health plan as individuals as well as
families and dependents of the principle members.
There are also less expensive medical plans available. The Priority Series is
an alternative to the full Comprehensive plan, offering ongoing day-to-day cover
with slightly less benefits. The Saver Series offers a Medical Savings Account
with general practitioner cover, hospital cover and chronic illness cover. If
you need hospital cover only, there is the Core Series. For the lower income
market there is the Keycare Series, providing access to primary care and
inlimited hospital benefits via an approved network of providers.
