Lion of Africa Insurance
Lion of Africa Insurance Company probably sports one of the most
unusual names for an insurance company, which also perfectly captures its
approach to insurance provision. Established in 1999, it represents the new wave
of South African insurance companies that have as their founding principles
black empowerment and the provision of insurance to all people in the country,
by making it a viable option for those who were not previously in a position to
take out insurance. It is a joint venture between one of the traditional South
African finance sector giants - Santam Limited, and Brimstone Investment
Corporation, which is a listed empowerment company, in conjunction with Commlife
Holdings.
Lion of Africa has proven itself to be a significant player in its
market. It has achieved an A rating for its ability to pay claims and for its
risk profile, awarded by the Global Credit Rating agency. This makes it the
highest rated black empowered short term insurance company in the country.
It provides insurance products to markets across the board: parastatals,
corporate, commercial and personal clients. It has offices based in Pretoria,
Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, with the main office in Johannesburg
undertaking the administrative, analytical and underwriting functions, while the
regional branches concentrate on the actual business of selling insurance and
servicing clients.
The corporate products include comprehensive insurance packages offering
cover for a wide range of risks, such as theft, business interruption, fire and
liability. There are also industry-specific products, like those for marine and
engineering sectors. Then there is a standard commercial insurance product
providing cover for all aspects of commercial enterprise. The personal line has
a Classic general insurance policy, including comprehensive household insurance
and liability protection, and the Select policy, which allows clients to choose
specific aspects of the general cover to suit their needs.
