Pet Insurance on the Rise in South Africa
January 15 - Not too long ago Insurance Guide reported an increase in popularity
amongst Americans for insurance policies for their pets, and now it seems that
pet insurance has reached South Africa and local pet owners are eager to get
their 'loved ones' insured.
Currently there are two medical aid companies in South Africa that cater for pet
insurance - Medipet and Petsure - both of which offer pet insurance starting
from just R116 per month. These companies offer not only 'financial protection'
for pets but their owners piece of mind too.
Said leading Durban veterinarian, Dr Klaus Schoeman, of Ashburne Veterinary
Clinic, 'Most people don't budget for unexpected medical expenses, especially
regarding their pets, but this pet insurance is easy and relatively
cost-effective to take out.
'While it remains to be seen whether all pet owners need to take out pet
insurance, it is clear that for people that dote over their pets and can easily
afford to make the monthly pet insurance premiums, that pet medical aid makes a
lot of sense', continued Schoeman.
The way the pet insurance works is that the pet owners must settle any
outstanding vet's bills and then claim back from their respective pet insurance
