PPS Insurance
PPS, which stands for Professional Provident Society, is an insurance
company dedicated to providing insurance for graduate professionals. It is the
largest of its kind in the world, with a local presence in South Africa. It
offers a complete basket of insurance, personal risk cover and healthcare
coverage for clients. The company was started by a group of dentists in 1941,
specifically to provide solutions for the particular needs of graduate
professionals that weren`t being addressed by general insurance packages.
Membership is not limited to the medical profession, but to any professional who
meets the criteria for membership. Those who are still studying towards their
professional qualifications may take advantage of the student membership option.
PPS Insurance is unique in that it is owned solely by the policy
holders themselves. Policy holders also make up the management board, along with
representatives of professional associations. Any income that the company`s
investments make over and above the underwriting needs is shared amongst policy
holders. In order to qualify for membership, a client needs to be under 51, hold
a professional or post-graduate degree or diploma, and who own their own
practices or are employed as professionals in a corporate environment.
The short-term insurance offered includes cover for household contents, motor
vehicles, buildings, personal liability, all risks, car hire, water craft and
leisure vehicles, and equipment. Roadside assistance is also part of the
package. Then there is the Professional Health Preserver, which insures you
against dread disease and physical impairment. It pays out as a lump sum, and
can be augmented each year to allow for inflation. There is also a female add-on
benefit available.
Life assurance is also available, with an option to convert to a normal
endowment or a whole life policy, via Sanlam - without the need for extra
underwriting.
