Profmed Medical Aid

Profmed is a medical aid scheme dedicated to providing medical aid coverage for graduate professionals. It is the largest scheme of its kind in South Africa. Profmed offers a choice of 5 different medical aid package options. These are: ProPinnacle, ProSecure, ProSecure Plus, ProActive and ProActive Plus. All of them cover hospitalisation; medicines required while in hospital; medical practitioners (including specialists) while in hospital; in-hospital radiology, pathology and scans (including MRI); dialysis; transplants; oncology; and rehabilitation. You are also covered for home nursing at a non-hospital treatment facility as well as treatment at a psychiatric facility. Other specialised procedures that are covered include joint replacement, transfusions, medical implants such as cochlear implants and cardiac stents. In-hospital dentistry is also covered. A range of screening procedures and tests are also catered for. The basic difference between the different packages is simply the coverage limits in financial terms, with the more expensive ones also covering certain elective procedures.

Chronic medication and day-to-day treatment are also covered by all the packages except for the ProActive packages, which function solely as hospital plans, as described above. The other packages cover such things as visitations, consulting room procedures, clinical psychology and psychiatric consultations, radiology, prescribed and over-the-counter medication, optometry, maternity and a range of supplementary benefits (such as hearing aids and asthma pumps).

This is clearly a widely comprehensive medical scheme that offers superb coverage and service to professionals. The scale of benefits is generous and the premiums compare favourably with industry averages, making it good value for money.
