Rand Mutual Assurance
Rand Mutual Assurance is a one of the vintage insurance companies in
South Africa offering comprehensive workers compensation schemes. Established in
1894 in the mining industry, it has grown over the years in tandem with both the
mining industry and the changes in the workers compensation underwriting and
insurance sector. It is generally considered to be the pioneer of workers`
insurance in this country. It also provides pension benefits through its wholly
owned subsidiary, RMA Life Assurance Company.
Rand Mutual Assurance has as its main product statutory workers`
insurance, covering employees and their dependents in the event of accidental
injury or death directly caused in the workplace, plus occupational diseases
arising during employment. Then there is their Augmentation Policy, which allows
for a top-up on the insurance cover enjoyed by employees of companies that are
members of Rand Mutual`s insurance scheme.
Additional specific cover has also been added to their product set, in the
form of their Commuting Journeys insurance policy, which covers employees in the
event of accidental injury or death while traveling to and from work, or
work-related events such as training courses. Reflecting the conditions in an
unstable labour scenario of a country like South Africa, there is also the Riot
and Mines Auxiliary Forces policy, which covers employees of member companies
against accidental injury or death sustained as a result of a riot, faction
fight or disturbance caused by other employees of member companies. Across all
of these offerings Rand Mutual strives to provide all of these services and
products in a cost effective manner for clients, while at the same time deriving
optimal investment return for its shareholders. It also has a community service
ethos that includes contributions to programmes aimed at uplifting the living
conditions of injured mineworkers and their families living in rural areas.
