SAIA Celebrates 100th Anniversary this Year
July 5 - This year (2007) marks the 100th Anniversary of the South African
Insurance Association (SAIA), a section 21 non-profit organisation that is aimed
at promoting the South African short-term insurance industry, as well as
creating awareness and understanding surrounding the industry.
The SAIA saw its beginnings way back in 1907, with the
formation of its earliest forerunner, the Council of Fire Insurance Companies,
followed by the Accident Insurance Council in 1925, and finally the formation of
The South African Insurance Association in 1973.
It was at this time that the SAIA took on the role of providing a forum and
platform from which its member insurance companies could come together and discuss
all manner of insurance-related matters and issues concerning the South African
insurance market.
An actual quote from the SAIA's charter in the 1970s sums up what the SAIA stood for
then and indeed continues to stand for today:
'It is the purpose of the SAIA to protect, promote and advance the common
interests of underwriters of all the classes of short term insurance business,
including the taking of such concerted measures as may be deemed expedient
whenever the business of the members of the Association may be affected by the
action or proposed action of any Government or other authority.'
Today, the SAIA has 54 members and is run by a board of directors that are
elected each year by its membership.
The current SAIA Chairman of the Board is Adam Samie and Chief Executive is Barry Scott.
